Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to common questions about your student loan options.

What happened to the SAVE plan?

The SAVE plan is ending. If you're enrolled, your loan servicer will notify you and give you a window to choose a new repayment plan. If you don't choose, you may be moved into a plan with a higher monthly payment.

What is the new RAP plan?

RAP is a new income-driven plan that launched July 1, 2026. Payments are based on your income and can be as low as $10 a month. Any remaining balance may be forgiven after 30 years of qualifying payments. Parent PLUS loans are not eligible.

What should I consider before consolidating?

Consolidating after July 1, 2026 may limit your repayment options to the new RAP or Tiered Standard plans, even for older loans. A lower monthly payment can also mean paying more interest over time. Review your current plan and options at StudentAid.gov before consolidating.

Can private loans be included in federal consolidation?

No. Federal Direct Consolidation Loans generally cover eligible federal student loans, not private loans. Private loans may be combined through refinancing with a private lender, but eligibility and rates depend on your credit, income, and other qualifications.

Are there alternatives to consolidation?

Depending on your situation, income-driven repayment, deferment, forbearance, refinancing, or other federal assistance programs may be worth comparing. The right option depends on your loan type, income, goals, and eligibility.
